At this stage one year ago, the Fusion was 2096 sales ahead of the second-ranked Toyota Camry.
But Camry volume has tumbled 13% through the first half of 2014 in advance of the updated MY2015 Camrys arrival. And the second-ranked Accord is down 2% this year, struggling to match the 2013 pace that saw Accord sales rise to a five-year high.
The Fusions June increase was certainly not symbolic of an overall improvement in the midsize sector, however. The Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, and Hyundai Sonata all reported year-over-year declines of at least 20%, a combined loss of 1240 units from those three models alone. The Camry, Accord, and Nissan Altima were collectively down 11%, a 485-unit decrease.
Canadian Altima volume has increased in only four of the last 18 months. The overall Nissan brand, on the other hand, is one of Canadas fastest-growing marques.

GCBC isnt here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why youll see the Outback and Venza listed with midsize SUVs, too... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.

Although the Canadian automobile markets traditional fondness for cheaper machines is alive and well - Civic outsells Accord, Escape outsells Explorer, C-Class outsells E-Class - the Porsche 911 sells more often than any of these cars. More often than the Boxster and Cayman, combined, as well.
In the second quarter alone, Porsche sold 311 911s in Canada. The expansion of Porsches product range certainly isnt limiting the sales of the brands most famous models. Annual 911 volume has increased in six of the last eight years and in eight of the last twelve months.

GCBC isnt here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better. This explains why youll see the Audi A5 here and with luxury cars, because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Clearly GoodCarBadCar is not suggesting that the cars in the two tables above are all direct competitors. Establishing categories among cars as unique as even the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster has never pleased a single reader, so cars have been lumped together so you can simply see how buyers looking for sports cars, roadsters, hot hatches, convertibles, GTs, and wanna-be sports cars spend their money. Greater categorization of cars would only lead to problems that automakers create by not isolating model-specific sales figures: we dont know how many M3s BMW has sold or how many Civics are Si models, for example. The numbers we do have are listed above. GoodCarBadCar is always open to hearing about the ways you would break down segments, so feel free to get in touch.

In the shadow of the very affordable Dodge Grand Caravan, the mini-minivan trio certainly appears unpopular.
Yet there are more Canadians registering new Orlandos, Rondos, and 5s than there are Canadians buying or leasing new Honda Odysseys or Toyota Siennas.
Faint praise? Perhaps, as the Sienna and Odyssey combine to own just 26.7% of Canadas full-size minivan category. They grabbed 45.5% of Americas minivan market in the first half of 2014, Mazda 5 excluded.
For every 20 full-size minivan sold in Canada, Mazda sells but one 5. Thats much more palatable than the one 5 for every 38 full-size minivans sold in the United States, especially considering the level of competition Mazda has in Canada, where the Rondo is typically more popular and the Orlando does generate some GM showroom activity.
Undoubtedly, the Mazda 5 tells us Americans dont want fun minivans. Canadians certainly dont either, but they dont say so with as much vehemence.
You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly Canadian auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page. This table is now sortable, so you can rank minivans any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.
