Large Luxury Car Sales In Canada January 2015

2015 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe
Canadian sales of flagship luxury cars took a nosedive in January 2015 as the segment-leading Mercedes-Benz S-Class slowed dramatically in comparison with January 2014, when it was still newly launched.

But it wasnt just the S-Classs fault. The BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ, Lexus LS, and Porsche Panamera all declined, as well. BMWs 7% 6-Series uptick equalled just two extra units, and Audi A8 sales were flat.

(The 6-Series is included in this post because of its price and its sedan emphasis. Mercedes-Benz CLS sales are not reported in Canada, and we therefore dont bother including the Audi A7 in this space, leaving it with its A6 platform-sharing partner in the midsize luxury post.)

Regardless, it says something about the S-Class that even with a 51% year-over-year decline, it still sold more often than the A8, 7-Series, LS, and Panamera combined

GCBC isnt here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not made available in Canada. Tesla doesnt release a monthly Model S sales report, either. ANDC estimates for Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce were 7, 18, 10, and 9, respectively, in January 2015. Tesla sold 123 cars in December. Total Maserati volume is reported, but not by specific models. GCBC shows the Cadillac XTS, Hyundai Equus, and Kia K900 with midsize luxury cars not because of their size, but because the price points are much more directly comparable.

Large Car Sales In Canada January 2015

2016 Toyota Avalon
Canadian sales of full-size, volume brand cars dropped 2% in January 2015, a modest 13-unit decline for a category which plunged 17% in calendar year 2014 and 20% in 2013.

Increases were reported across a broad cross-section of the category, from the two GM nameplates to the four "import" nameplates, as well.

The Dodge Charger, though down 14%, led the class with 213 sales. Its sibling, the Chrysler 300, helped FCA earn 41% of the categorys sales.

But the overall numbers are nevertheless staggeringly low. These nine cars generated less than 1% of all new vehicle sales activity in January. Combined, they sold less often than the Honda Fit.

For MY2016, the Toyota Avalon is receiving a slight rejig. That wont change the fact that Canadians dont want Avalons, nor do they want to drive big, non-premium-brand cars at all.

* Genesis refers only to the sedan, not the coupe. For Canadian purposes - Hyundai USA doesnt yet breakdown sales figures for the sedan and much less costly coupe - the Genesis will now be shown with both these volume brands, with which Hyundai is a direct competitor, and midsize luxury cars, with which the Genesis competes.
