October 2014 U S SUV And Crossover Sales Rankings Top 90 Best Selling SUVs In America Every SUV Ranked

2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro
SUV and crossover sales in the United States grew 10% in October 2014, a 38,000-unit improvement compared with October 2013.

The larger passenger car market, on the other hand, grew by just 17,000 units in October. The smaller pickup truck category was up 10%, as well, a near-19,000-unit improvement. Minivan sales, up 6% through the first three-quarters of 2014, fell 2% in October 2014.

Utility vehicles were led in October - and in year-to-date terms - by the Honda CR-V. Not only was the CR-V Americas top-selling SUV/crossover in October 2014, it was also American Hondas best-selling model, ahead of the normally more popular Accord and Civic.

Last month did mark best-ever October sales for the Ford Escape, but the second-ranked SUV in America still trailed the CR-V by 4338 units; by 15,191 heading into November.

The Lincoln MKC, Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, and BMW X4 werent on sale at this time a year ago, but theyve contributed 20,421 sales to the SUV categorys ledger in 2014.

In terms of volume, the more meaningful addition has been the Jeep Cherokee, which arrived late last October. 143,848 Cherokees have been sold this year – 169,634 since the nameplate returned - and its been the best-selling Jeep in each of the last two months. Jeep is second only to niche automaker Maserati as the fastest-growing auto brand in America.

^ Escalade here does not include sales of the EXT, which is shown with pickup trucks.
Rather than listing the 500L with the Mini Paceman and Countryman in these SUV/crossover rankings, its with cars in large part because it is not available with all-wheel-drive. The placement of numerous crossovers often prompts disagreement, but consider the vehicle types name: crossover. By its very definition, it crosses over from one category into another. The very act of calling, for example, the Toyota Venza a car or a utility vehicle requires ignorance of the fact that the Venza (or Outback, Crosstour, Encore, Countryman, 500L) is a square peg that cant be squeezed through a round hole.

Large Car Sales In America October 2014 YTD

In an improved passenger car market – sales rose 3% across the category – the large, volume-brand car category slid 8% in October 2014, brought down by the Chevrolet Impala, Dodge Charger, Hyundai Azera, Kia Cadenza, and the Ford Taurus most especially.

Civilian Taurus volume fell 40% to 3019 units. Impala volume was 3.5 times stronger. Ford also sold 756 Taurus Police Interceptors, though that figure represents a 24% decline. (Ford Explorer Police Interceptor sales jumped 20% to 2041 units in October.)

From the low end to the high end, October simply wasnt a great month for these big cars. Model year changeovers can impact the totals achieved by a car like the Dodge Charger, refreshed for MY2015, but sales slid 11%, the third month in the last five in which Charger volume has fallen.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet SS experienced its second-lowest full month total since arriving a year ago. Only September, when 111 were sold, was worse. GM dealers are sitting on a relative glut of SS inventory. There are nearly 600 in stock right now, according to Cars.com, and Automotive News says GM had a 195-day supply at the beginning of October 2014.

You can click any model name in the tables below to find historical monthly and yearly U.S. auto sales data. You can also select a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page. This table is sortable, so you can rank large cars any which way you like. Suggestions on how GCBC should break down segments can be passed on through the Contact page.

Top 20 Worst Selling Vehicles In America October 2014

2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS
Model year changeovers had an impact on a large number of vehicles on sale in the United States in October 2014, enhancing the sales figures of some, and dragging down the totals achieved by others.

• U.S. Vehicle Sales Rankings By Model - October 2014 YTD

Mercedes-Benz, which typically sells more than 680 CLS-Class sedans per month in the United States, sold just 33 in October.

Porsche Cayenne volume tumbled to just 712 units, a 57% decline, as supply dried up and as some buyers were surely more interested in the Macan, a vehicle reviewed by GCBC last weekend.

In other cases, some of Americas worst-selling vehicles are expired models like the Acura TSX and TL, two sedans replaced by the hot-selling TLX. TLX sales in October 2014 were up 95% compared with the TL and TSXs total from a year ago.

You can always select a make and model at GCBCs Sales Stats page to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures from both Canada and the United States. Pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post, but you can also find related links at the Best Sellers page.
